Scott explains how to change your habits and Life, identify your established patterns, what triggers them, and how to change them with baby steps.

About the Book

This is one of the best books I have read on identifying and changing unproductive habits to improve our lives. With less than 100 pages, it hardly takes an hour to read.

The book is divided into three parts: 1) Pillars of habit changing, 2) Understanding the habit routine that dictates your level of happiness, and 3) 30 small changes you can make to improve your Life.

Excerpts from each part –


Part I – Pillars of Habit Changing

  • Scott suggests that we are often unaware of the habits we have developed. All it takes is a little observation, identifying the detrimental ones, scheduling to change those habits, and holding ourselves accountable for change.
  • The difference between habit and addiction is described well with simple examples. Brushing hair is a habit with favorable outcomes, whereas smoking & drinking are addictions and have adverse results.
  • If there is a level of craving, then this may be a habit you have learned but one that restricts your Life.

Part II – Understanding the Habit Routine that Dictates Your Level of Happiness

As we identify our habits and distinguish between good and evil, the second step is understanding how it affects our productivity and happiness in general.

1) How do Triggers Work? – All our bad habits emerge from a lack of confidence, some bad experiences, and a lack of worthiness. Instead of spiraling down into bad habits or leaving good ones, one must determine what affects their response, mood, and activity.

2) Trying Different Habit RoutinesAs you identify your bad habits, triggers, and routine, replace routine them with alternatives. Scott gives simple-to-follow examples like adding water intakes instead of coffee rounds, trying different train homes, and considering stopping by the park to unwind and relax before you go home.

Scott also offers a few ideas to change bad habits –

1) Learn to Forgive Yourselflet’s face it, every time we try to change some habits or try new things, we do give up at times, and Scott suggests that’s OK and urges readers to forgive themselves and accept giving up as part of the process.

2) Identifying Underlying Causes – This one is good and takes self-examination. Instead of treating symptoms, we look at the cause of it. Scott explains this with a drinking habit— any who drink hide behind drinking to avoid facing a real problem.

Only they can examine and face that problem; as they do, drinking automatically fades away.


Part III – 30 Small Changes You Can Make to Improve Your Life

As they say, Life is great when there is balance. Physical, Financial, Relationships, and Spiritual Well-being. Scott offers habits that all of us can teach to a fulfilling life.

You may have a few of them already established, and you can build others to make the best of Life. Here are a few habits He offers in each aspect of Life.

1) Productivity Habits

  • Use a calendar to diary things that need to be done.
  • Allot a certain amount of time first thing in the morning as “quiet” time.
  • Sort work into priorities of Urgent, Routine, Non-Urgent, and that which can be delegated.

2) Relationship Habits

  • Learn Active ListeningThis is the best thing you can give in any relationship. Active listening is scarce in times of distraction and is highly underestimated.
  • Learn to Say “NO” – This is another habit that one must inculcate. You may consider reading the book The Art of Saying NO. It’s a fantastic book on how to say no in any situation without sounding weird.

3) Financial Habits

  • Work out your goals and save for things you want to happen in your Life.
  • Know what your monthly expenditure is and balance your bank statements.
  • Enjoy simple pleasures in Life.

4) Spirituality and Well-Being

  • MindfulnessNo matter how you feel about this word, you should understand mindfulness’s significance and reap its benefits. I recently read the book 10 Minute Mindfulness. t teaches 71 habits that take 10 Minutes or less to bring mindfulness into our daily lives.
  • Learn to be HumbleHumility is a highly learned trait of a successful, happy person. There are many successful people, yet only glad among them are the most humble ones.

5) Health and physical fitness –

  • Respect Your Need for Sleep – Numerous researches have been done regarding proper sleep and its effects on overall well-being. Give yourself enough sound sleep, and you’ll reap the benefits of it in the long term.
  • Exercise SufficientlyWe live in a time when it is easy to devise many excuses for not exercising. However, we also have many options to teach movement in our routine. Choose what suits you best.
